Pets are cute, but let’s be honest: they can stink. If you are in the process of selling your home, it is a good idea to eliminate odors prior to showings, and especially before your buyers move in. Even if they are pet owners themselves, it is considered courteous to make the home smell and look good as new.

Here are a few tips to effectively get rid of undesirable pet odors — or prevent them in the first place.

Vacuum regularly

Pet hair and dander can build up quickly, which is why it is important to vacuum your carpets, upholstery, and floors at least once a week. Some vacuum cleaners on the market, such as the Bissell CleanView Swivel Rewind Pet Vacuum Cleaner, the Kenmore Pet Friendly POP-N-GO Bagged Canister Vacuum and the Dyson V15 Detect, are specially designed to effectively hoover up pet hair.

Invest in an air purifier

An air purifier can help remove pet odors by capturing hair, dander, and other allergens. These compact, affordable appliances are designed to improve internal air quality by ingesting potentially harmful dirt, dust, and debris.

Wash your pet's belongings

If your pet enjoys snuggling on a bed or cushion and chewing on toys, these items can be a huge culprit when it comes to stench. Pet beds, for instance, capture dander, hair, saliva, and yes... even urine. Your pet's bedding, toys, winter sweaters, and other belongings should be thoroughly laundered regularly to remove any lingering odors caused by bacteria. Be sure to follow instructions to ensure nothing shrinks in the washer or dryer (Hint: Some items may require air drying).

To avoid your furniture having to be professionally cleaned, another helpful tip is to cover your pet’s favorite couch, chair, or ottoman with a protective covering such as a folded blanket, sheet, or towel, which can be quickly laundered.

Clean up accidents promptly

If your pet has an accident in the house, clean it up immediately, preferably with an enzymatic cleaner designed specifically for pet messes. These products contain potent enzymes in their ingredients that help rinse away stains.

Sprinkle baking soda

Baking soda can be used for so much more than whipping up a batch of cookies and cleaning the bathtub. It’s also an incredibly powerful odor absorbent! Sprinkling baking soda onto carpets, upholstery, and other durable fabrics can help soak up odors and moisture. Let the baking soda sit for at least an hour before vacuuming it up.

Open the windows

When the weather permits, allowing fresh air to circulate throughout your home can help banish odors naturally.
